Back in Time

When our ancestors were likely to be wielding spears and flint knives, the ancestors of modern cattle, the wild and woolly Aurochs, roamed the untamed landscapes of Europe and Asia.

These free-roaming animals were hunted by early humans for meat, hides and bones.

Significantly larger and much more aggressive than modern cows they must have made formidable prey for those ancient hunters.

Over time, humans selectively bred Aurochs for traits that were beneficial to them, like docility, milk production, and meat quality. This selective breeding eventually led to the development of the domestic cattle we know today.

The Legacy of the Aurochs

While aurochs are now extinct, their legacy lives on in the domestic cattle breeds that descended from them, including Highland cattle. The taming of the aurochs remains a testament to the ingenuity and resourcefulness of early humans and their ability to adapt to their environment.

Over time, selective breeding led to the development of distinct breeds of cattle with specific traits suited to different environments and human needs. Some populations were bred for milk production, while others were bred for meat, draft power, or other purposes.

Domesticated cattle played a crucial role in the development of agriculture and settled societies. They provided a reliable source of food in the form of meat and milk, as well as hides for clothing and shelter. Cattle were also used as draft animals for plowing fields, pulling carts, and transporting goods.
